Remove Harmful Chemicals from Foods
When growing up, Clayton never had a food allergy. After living abroad for a few years, Clayton returned to his family farm and found he had developed a mild food allergy to many processed foods. This caused Clayton to start researching processed foods. This is what he learned:
-
Many food processors were formerly Big Tobacco, which applied tactics they learned to food products.
- One tactic used by food manufacturers is adding sugar, sometimes secretly, to foods. Sugar has many addictive properties, leading to higher food consumption.
- American foods often have many more chemicals than their counterparts (from the same company) in different countries.
- Some of the ingredients in US foods are derived from oil, including food dyes.
- Eating highly processed foods leads to insulin resistance, which causes several health issues, including but not limited to diabetes, dementia, cancer, etc.
As Texas Agriculture Commissioner, Clayton Tucker will work to remove harmful chemicals from foods, especially in schools. Clayton will work to update Texas labeling laws to start labeling processed foods (with the ultimate goal of making organic or whole foods the base and "processed" foods the abnormal) and label foods not grown in Texas (with the ultimate goal of making locally grown foods the base and imported foods the abnormal). Clayton will enforce standards to ensure labels are accurate, including but not limited to pasture-raised, cage-free, grass-fed, etc. Clayton will work with the state and federal governments, as well as others, to achieve these goals.
